When Spring approaches and warmer weather and sunnier days begin to appear, people return to our local and county parks. Unfortunately, when we visit our favorite areas, we discover the large amounts of trash that has accumulated during the winter months. That is why the Forest Park Environmental Awareness Program, along with Great Parks of Hamilton County, Kroger, JTM and Wildbird Unlimited sponsor the annual Winton Woods Cleanup.
For the last 32 years, this cleanup has attracted an average of 250 volunteers from as far away as Kentucky and Indiana. In three hours, these volunteers collect approximately 2 to 3 tons of litter and debris.
However, the Cleanup is not just an event focused on picking up litter. The sponsors also want this event to be fun for everyone. Therefore, after the cleanup, volunteers
are rewarded with a free picnic lunch (courtesy of the Forest Park Environmental Program and JTM). They are also entertained with a raffle where approximately 30 prizes (courtesy of Wildbird Unlimited) are given away. There are also prizes for the largest group, the Dirtiest Individual and most recently a prize for the largest school group.
This annual event is always scheduled in April and is part of the month-long Earth Day celebration. Please give the Winton Woods Cleanup consideration when you are planning your "green" activities. With your help, we can make Greater Cincinnati a healthier place to live, not only for ourselves but also for the wildlife that lives in the Winton Woods area.
