329.5 million people in the U.S. X 4.9 lbs./day X 364 days = 294 million tons of solid waste/YEAR!

Facts about solid waste generated in the United States

  • The U.S. is the #1 trash-producing country in the world at 1,789 pounds per person per year.
  • Every year, each American throws out about 1,200 pounds of organic garbage that can be composted.
  • Over 11 million tons of recyclable clothing, shoes, and textiles make their way into landfills each year.
  • The majority of the 4 million tons of junk mail that Americans receive annually ends up in landfills.
  • About one-third of an average landfill is made up of packaging material.
This list could continue for quite awhile.  The key questions we must NOW answer are:

  • How can we reduce the amount of solid waste generated?
  • What alternatives do we have to reuse, reduce and/or recycle these materials?
The Forest Park Environmental Program website has provided Greater Forest Park residents with ideas and methods of reducing, reusing and recycling many of the materials currently being landfilled.  Just place your cursor on the heading on the left side of this page (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) and see what "pops" out.  If you have any questions concerning the information, please do not hesitate to call us.
