Computer "Reuse" Program

Each year the City of Forest Park has approximately 15+ computers that need to be retired.  In previous years, these computers were taken to Cleanlites for recycling purposes. However, in 2021, the staff in the Information Technology (IT) Department approached those in the Environmental Office to discuss whether or not the computers could be refurbished and distributed to families in need of a computer, specifically those with children in the Winton Woods/Northwest Woods School Districts.

After researching the components needed to bring the computers up-to-date, it was determined that each refurbish computer would cost approximately $300.  This would include the following improvements:
  • new hard drives
  • new software
  • new monitors, keyboards and mice
  • new WiFi adaptors

Soon a partnership was formed with the Environmental Program agreeing to purchase the needed equipment and the IT Department agreeing to complete all the installations.  All that was left was notifying school district families of this opportunity which the WWSD agreed to do.

The results ...............

  • 11 computers were distributed to families
  • 4 computers were given to the FP Recreation Department for their Senior Computer Workshop
It is hoped this partnership will continue for many years.
