Animal Traps

animal trap with bait in it

The department maintains a set of humane small-animal traps that may be lent out to residents experiencing a nuisance small-animal issue. The traps are useful for catching larger rodents, and small mammals. The traps are most successful when used to catch raccoons or possum.  These traps are not effective for catching very small animals like mice and lizards.  Traps and repellants for these animals may be purchased from almost any hardware store.  Animals and insects which pose a hazard to the handler are beyond the scope and limited resources of this program.  This includes beehives, wasp nests and skunks.  Because of the special handling required, skunk trapping is contracted-out to a wildlife control company.  Due to the expense and the need to cut the department budget by 10% in 2020, skunk trapping has been suspended for the coming year and is likely to be discontinued indefinitely.
