Income Tax Filing Tips and Facts

MANDATORY FILING:  All residents, 18 years or older must file a tax return with the City of Forest Park, even if no tax is due.   This includes those who rent, business owners, and property landlords.  Taxes are based on an individual's earned income.  Withholding tax is required for employees working in the City of Forest Park including those less than 18 years of age.

TAX RATE:  1.5% FOR 2016 Returns and the 2017 estimated tax.

TAX CREDIT CHANGE:  On 11/18/2013, City Council passed an ordinance that reduces the credit given to taxes paid to another municipality:

Effective 1/1/2014, residents will be given a 25% credit for taxes paid to other municipalities.  This allows for a maximum credit of .375% of taxes paid to another municipality based on a tax rate of 1.5% or higher.  If the tax rate of the other municipality is less than 1.5%, the taxpayer would only receive a credit up to 25% of that city's tax rate.

·         Example:

o   In 2016, a Forest Park resident works in Cincinnati, earns $50,000/year,

o   Person has Cincinnati tax of 2.1% withheld from paycheck totaling $1,050.

o   Forest Park will now only allow a credit up to .375% of $50,000 or $187.50.

o   Total Forest Park Liability: $50,000 x 1.5% = $750 - $187.50 = 562.50 balance due.
