Environmental Awareness / Solid Waste Management

The City of Forest Park is fortunate to have an award winning environmental awareness program in a city this size. This program promotes responsible stewardship of our natural resources by fostering a spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility among citizens, businesses, institutions, and governmental agencies towards the enhancement of local, regional, and global environmental quality.

The Environmental Awareness Program plays a central role in the City's solid waste management plan. Through the programs listed below, the amount of solid waste entering our landfills is greatly reduced while those materials collected for recycling purposes significantly conserves our natural resources.

These programs are also valuable to the residents of Forest Park because the City receives approximately $25 per ton for the recyclables collected.  Over $20,000 is annually received from the Hamilton County Solid Waste Management District for the City's recycling efforts.  These funds not only allow the Environmental Program to continue sponsoring the programs mentioned above, but they also allow for the development of different programs.

One such program is the very proactive Community Outreach component of our department.  It contains a comprehensive election of environmental presentations for pre-schoolers to older adults, an extensive library loan program, and a sponsored field trip service that relates to many of our presentations.  An Environmental High IQ Bowl is also conducted each year. This competition tests the knowledge of 6th graders on a wide range of environmental topics.
